Memory is Like Salt

A friend told me a story about two men who happen to run into each other at their favorite spot every day – on a bench located near the beach. The one man said to the other, “You look miles away… what are you thinking about?” The other man replied, “Every day, I dream about how I was sitting on this same bench 25 years ago with my wife. She always loved to get up and dance on the beach like no one was watching. Now I come here daily to try to relive the memories.”

The first man replied, “That’s great to enjoy your memories, but don’t forget that memory is like salt. The right amount brings out the flavor in food, and too much ruins it. If you live in the past all the time, you’ll find yourself with no present to remember."

Here’s the way I see it: Dr. Seuss said it best, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” And remember, we’re here to help with your important printing so you can focus on the more important things in life.

Understanding Photoshop File Formats
NOT ALL ARE CREATED EQUAL

If you're not familiar with standard Photoshop file formats, it may sound like a foreign language. Fortunately, there are only a few options that are used regularly in printing. Understanding the differences and when to use each particular file format will ensure that you have the best possible outcome with your printed projects. The three key file formats that you should be aware are PNG, JPEG, and RAW formats.

PNG Format

The big value that PNG brings to the virtual table is the ability to display graphics on a transparent background. This is especially important if you're creating a logo or artwork with multiple layers -- or stacks -- of graphics. While this is a nice-to-have feature when you're combining files together or overlapping images, the file size does tend to be larger than with other standard formats. Some browsers also interpret PNGs differently than others, making it important to preview your work on various platforms when using PNGs on a website.

PNG vs JPEG

JPEG Format

If you're a Windows user, you may be more familiar with seeing this file typewritten as JPG, although they both represent the same file type. JPEG files are known as an all-around workhorse because the file types are relatively small and the quality can be quite high. Many of the images that you'll see on websites are JPEG files as the smaller file size allows a website to load more quickly. The key difference between PNG and JPEG is the inability of a JPEG to offer a transparent background. In the absence of color in the background of an image, JPEG will default to appear white.

RAW Format

Raw Format

Technically, RAW isn't a format at all, but rather a description of files without additional processing applied. These files may come from camera manufacturers such as Nokia or Canon, but the key identifier for RAW files is their sheer size. It is not unusual for a RAW file to be ten times the file size as a JPEG or PNG format. These files are meant to capture the depth and dimension of photography in their full glory, while JPEG and PNG are more likely to be an approximation of the original file with far fewer details.

It can be difficult for the naked eye to tell the difference between these types of images. However, if you're looking at each of them at 100 percent magnification on a screen, like a graphic designer will to make adjustments, you'll understand why it's important to know what type of file you are dealing with.

BOOST EMPLOYEE MORALE AND FOCUS ON THEIR SUCCESSES

While many companies use newsletters to build relationships with their customers, many overlook the team building potential that an internal newsletter could have on their own employees. An employee newsletter is a great way to boost employee morale and focus on their successes.

Here are a few tips for creating an employee newsletter your team will love:

  • Include “Employee Spotlight” articles as a fun way for employees to get to know each other. The info could range from the employee’s position within your company to their hobbies, interests, family photos, etc.

  • Acknowledge employee birthdays, corporate anniversaries, new hires, promotions, team successes, and more.

  • Keep your team informed with customer survey results, customer compliments, and thank you notes from appreciative customers.

  • Assign a few teams to specific parts of the newsletter each month, such as pulling company stats (sales volume, tradeshow outcomes, etc.), taking photos at company events, etc.

  • Create an ideas library. Stockpile various ideas, photos, jokes, quotes, seasonal graphics, etc. to save time down the road.

Mom, Can I Have a Smartphone?
SAFETY TIPS AND GROUND RULES TO CONSIDER

If you have younger kids and haven’t already been asked about getting a smartphone… get ready, since it’s coming soon! More than 80 percent of kids between the ages of 12 and 17 have a cell phone, as well as 60 percent of kids between the ages of 8 and 12. Here are a few safety tips and ground rules to consider:

  • Create a contract with your child outlining your rules. For example, no texting while driving. Must give parents lock code and passwords. Parents will have access to all phone call history and text message history. Grades must be acceptable or phone privilege is gone. No phone before homework and chores are complete. No phone after 9 pm.

  • When getting started, consider a cell plan that offers only talk and text, with an option to add data later when your child is ready for the responsibility of internet access.

  • Create dual passwords, which allows you to install parental restrictions on Androids and iPhones. Consider an app such as Family Link (available on Android). Parents can see the location of their child’s phone, manage apps, keep an eye on screen time, and remotely lock your child's device.

  • If your child has access to the internet, set up a safe internet search tool with parental control, such as downloading the “Safe Search Kid” app on your phone or visiting www.safesearchkids.com/app.html

  • Consider downloading an app that limits their online usage, and will automatically disable the device when the time is up.

  • Model the behavior you are expecting from your children. If they see you on your phone nonstop, they will expect to do the same.

  • And most importantly, remember that the best smartphone and social media safety is not a simple app. It is having discussions with your child. Help them understand the dangers of having a phone and teach them how to make wise choices.
